Donald's Biography PDF Print E-mail

Donald was a “first” here at the National Eagle Center in many ways. He was our first Golden Eagle, our first male, and our first transplant from beyond the Midwest. With the addition of Donald, the National Eagle Center is now able to exhibit both species of eagles in North America, the Bald Eagle and the Golden Eagle.

Donald came to the National Eagle Center from the California Raptor Center out of the University of California, Davis. Like several of our rescued eagles, Donald was in a vehicular accident. His hatch year was in or before 2001.

We are unsure of his exact age. His fully developed plummage suggests he was at least five years of age when he began treatment in California. After exhausting all procedures to rehabilitate his right wing, it became clear that Donald's injuries prohibited flight.

Through the generousity of the Donald Weesner Charitable Trust, this beautiful Westerner came to us on January 8, 2008. He was affectionately named “Donald” for the benefactor who made his arrival and training possible.

After only a few months, Donald was ready to become part of our eagle mews. This transition was quite amazing as most of his life was in the wild and human contact was a rare event.

During his first year, he continued to be bashful among the other eagles and with guests. He often spent the day looking only at the murals with quick glances toward people.

Now, Donald plays an integral role in the educational rotation at the Center. His body language suggests he is very comfortable in his surroundings and is able to eat with others watching. Donald is also participating in the “Photo with the Eagle” program at the Center.

Donald has ignited new interest in understanding the life and habitat of North America’s “other” eagle and has inspired further study by the Eagle Center staff and many of our guests.
